MCM Winner of Affiliate Exceptional Service to landscaping in BALI Awards 2019

As well as presenting the Principal Award to the winner in the Regeneration Scheme £500K Category as Sponsors at this year’s BALI Awards, we’ll be celebrating our own successes too! For demonstrating “exemplary standards of professional excellence”, MCM have achieved this Award after their very first nomination. Out of 145 entries submitted in 2019, 91 National Landscape Awards have been bestowed on 63 members of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI).

“They are a safe pair of hands, with the service, product range, technical knowledge and value for money that we look for in a supplier.”

The Principal Award Winner in this and all other Categories will be announced at the BALI Awards on Friday 6 December.  MCM will be attending as Sponsors and potential Principal Winners.  The team will be celebrating alongside their clients and associates and toasting all their achievements in the highest echelons of the landscape industry.

“Immense pride….unending support and professionalism.”

Speaking after the winners were announced on Monday 9 September 2019, Managing Director Shazna Ali spoke of her “immense pride” in the team she has helped build and their “unending support and professionalism” in one of the most competitive arenas for the supply of topsoil, aggregates and waste services for landscape and construction projects.

Jason Matthias

Supporting, nurturing, empowering: The M of MCM

Supporting, nurturing, empowering: The M of MCM

The M of MCM

Every business has a personality at its very heart: a leader, an innovator, a force that drives them to succeed.  And at the centre of our MCM heart is Jason Matthias.  Through the M of Matthias Construction Materials, Jason’s spirit continues to inspire and enthuse the team as it has done since he started the company in 1992.  A personality that made a huge impact on the industry, his clients, his associates, his colleagues and above all his wife Shazna and their children, the ripples of Jason’s sudden passing in November 2016 at the age of 56 have been felt every day since.

The MCM Family

Jason and Shazna Matthias built and fortified the MCM business which continues to thrive and remains firmly grounded on the most solid of foundations.  Every November, everyone upon whom Jason’s light shone remembers him for his lust for life, his supportive and encouraging nature and how he always looked out for, supported and empowered his staff.  This ethos and his spirit lives on across the MCM family – at business and at home.

Strong principles and inspiration

Jason instilled the spirit of inclusiveness at MCM. Everyone was welcome. Jason managed to join the dots between supplier and customer. Today, we maintain this core standard inspired by him and thus continue the traditions of good value and great business practice. Director Shazna shares a few words on her husband, her business partner, her friend and his legacy:
“A most genuine, beautiful man with values to match and a real lust for life and business success. His natural ability to support, nurture and encourage those around him is instilled in all of us.  Jason remains a shining light throughout MCM.  Jason’s legacy in our business is his work ethic, his passion and his aim to empower others to be the same.  His commitment to honest values and solid business practices lives on – something we’re really proud of.  We’re still a family business with me at the helm and most of our team were lucky enough to know and appreciate Jason’s attributes first-hand.  They continue to reflect these in their ongoing development of the business, all day, every day.  A truly unique and remarkable man in life, business and friendship, the Matthias name lives on in all of us.  Jason was a true leader with a passion for life and has instilled life-changing values in all of us and our staff and management team. A friend to all.

Legacy

MCM now supplies over 500,000 tonnes of construction and landscaping material for each year, including 100,000 tonnes of topsoil and 250,000 tonnes of primary aggregates – and 100,000 one-tonne bags.
The M of MCM is synonymous with multi-faceted products, meticulous attention to detail and mastery in the supply of soils, aggregates and waste removal … but for the MCM team, it will remain the M of Jason Matthias: businessman, husband, father, colleague and friend.

MCM celebrate Excellence at BALI National Landscape Awards 2019

The Place? Grosvenor House, Park Lane.  The Event? The 43rd BALI National Landscape Awards 2019.  The Result? A fantastic culmination of a very successful year in landscaping supply.  The Reason? A chance to raise a glass or two to celebrate our Award win in the Affiliate Exceptional Service Category and our Sponsorship of the Regeneration Scheme >£500K with winners Blakedown Landscapes.

Affiliate Excellence

The annual Awards are organised and promoted by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) at the event that took place on Friday 6 December 2019.  They celebrate the skills, hard work, quality, commitment and successes of BALI Registered members and are the largest landscape Awards in Europe. They recognise excellence in landscape design, construction and maintenance both in the UK and overseas, as well as awarding Employer Excellence and Affiliate Exceptional Service – and that’s us!

The judge’s feedback was that the quality and comprehensive content of the MMCM Award Submission was clear, concise and had good supporting evidence.

“A worthy winner, congratulations to all concerned” – BALI Judging Panel

WINNER Regeneration Project £500K+: Blakedown Landscapes SE

MCM also reinforced their BALI membership support as they once again took the stage as Sponsors in the category “Regeneration Scheme over £500,000”.  Both award winners, Talbot Farm Landscapes and Blakedown Landscapes, had submitted exceptional projects.  The Principal Winner Award was presented by MCM’s Managing Director Shazna Ali to Blakedown for their Great Yarmouth Borough Council Venetian Waterways project.  The scheme also received a Special Award for ‘Best Community involvement’ at the Awards.

Award-winning projects with MCM topsoils and aggregates

Our involvement didn’t stop there.  As well as working with 12 other 2019 BALI Award winners this year on landscaping and construction projects, we had direct involvement in FIVE of this year’s Award Winning schemes, including TWO Principal Award Winners:

MCM Permeable Aggregates

Weathering the storm: 2/6mm Permeable Recycled Aggregate from MCM

Weathering the storm: 2/6mm Permeable Recycled Aggregate from MCM

The perfect permeable recycled aggregate

Free-draining for rainwater management

With site drainage considerations particularly crucial at this time of year, it is worth considering a recycled aggregate alternative to keep your landscape and groundworks free of standing water and run-off this season.

Effective, free-draining and cheaper than a primary aggregate, this 2/6mm permeable aggregate bedding layer helps you meet sustainability targets on site, reducing the drain on natural resources by opting for a secondary aggregate.   A bonus for the environment and your financial budgets.

Available from MCM as an underlayer for block paving and driveways, this recycled aggregate is ideal for landscaping projects as well as groundworks.

Sourcing materials with SuDS in mind

MCM 2/6mm Permeable Aggregate allows surface water to run off and escape through the sub-base and into the ground beneath.  Its grading gives a balance between the sub-base layer’s stability and the free movement of water off, down and through.

This makes this recycled permeable aggregate the perfect base layer for sports pitches, paving, car parks and driveways.

MCM waste management muckaway

All excavated waste must now be classified | EA Changes 31 January 2021

All excavated waste must now be classified | EA Changes 31 January 2021

Classifying and assessing waste

Environment Agency changes from 31 January 2021

As of the end of January 2021, the Environment Agency (EA) will require that all unassessed waste from utilities excavations must be classified as hazardous.

What does the mean for me?

Whilst previously under the EA’s Regulatory Position Statement RPS 211 such wastes could have been classified as non-hazardous, it now means that you must assess, classify and arrange removal and disposal of such materials differently – as hazardous waste poses a potential threat of contamination.

How can MCM help?

If you have waste from excavations on your site, you can contact our Waste Team.  We can visit sites to inspect, test and classify waste types, reporting on findings and propose remediation, removal and disposal.  This assessment will assign a European Waste Code (latest copy to viewable here) and will enable us to organise its swift and safe removal and disposal so that your site works may continue unhampered. To find out more, call the MCM Waste Team on 0330 128 1030 or contact us today.

You can view the full EA’s Guidance for Excavated waste from Utilities here.

Celebrating excellent landscapes

MCM step up again as Category Sponsors

Accredited supplier every year for almost twenty years, MCM’s history with the British Association of Landscape Industries is almost as long as its own long-served foundations as the company heads towards its quarter century.

Recognising the importance of engagement and collaboration with recognised contractors, suppliers and designers, our association with BALI has been a vital link in our communication chains to industry over the years.  The relationship started back in the early 2000s, when founder Jason Matthias cemented the bond with the trade organisation as MCM made its name in the supply of soils and aggregates to landscape projects across the South East.

A category of great significance in the landscape industry, the Community and Schools Development Award boasts past winners including Garden Club London (2017),  Ground Control (2018 and 2019) and most recently idverde for Holland Park (2020).

45th BALI National Landscape Awards 2021

It is hoped this year’s Ceremony will be a live, attended event on Friday 3 December 2021.  MCM will be attending alongside Award Winners, suppliers and industry partners who will gather to celebrate and applaud all those who have played a part in and continue to promote the creation of prestigious landscapes across the UK. The Event will also support its Charity partners BALI Chalk Fund and Greenfingers.

MCM Waste Management

Your 4-point waste management checklist:

Your 4-point waste management checklist:

Are you on top of your demolition waste?

From inspection, to classification, to remediation

From a site management perspective, soil disposal and waste removal needs sensible and wise consideration and handling. Considering on-site inspection and testing, identification, classification, segregation, removal and remediation, it’s a lot to contend with.

We get it.

Your Site Waste Management Checklist

  1. Have you had a soil report? Do you really understand what it shows?
  2. Are you managing your waste properly and efficiently?
  3. What will you do if your site waste needs special treatment and removal? Have you budgeted for this?
  4. Shouldn’t how you handle waste reflect the professionalism you demonstrate in your finished landscapes too?

It’s our area of expertise. Successfully supporting our clients for over 20 years, MCM find the most effective environmental routes for your waste stream for clean soils, waste containing asbestos, hazardous or non-hazardous material.

One partner. One call.

Rapid on site testing

Worried about waste and contamination?

Worried about waste and contamination?

It’s your call: Rapid Measure Testing

Worry-free Muck and Waste Testing on Site

As a contractor or landscaper, you’ll recognise the importance of managing the site clearance.  The soil, muck and waste you remove will likely be a mix of materials and will need to be handled differently.
  • What if there is potentially contaminated soil?
  • What if there is coal tar present?
  • What are the classifications of contaminants?
  • How will you know where to start?

Your Site Waste Management Checklist

The answer is simple: an on-site Rapid Measure Test.  The MCM team can be on site quickly – even the same day of your call.  We’ll take some representative samples of the materials and have the results back to you swiftly, with classification and a full report.  Once we know what we’re up against, we can take it from here.  The classification report will help us gain approval from local facilities so that we can advise on the best remedial action – and take the hassle of arranging that off your hands too.

Managing waste to save time and money

That’s comprehensive testing, classification and remediation, saving you time and money and allowing you to move your builds forward.  And if the volume of contaminated material is too large to deal with immediately, we can return weekly and repeat the rapid measure testing, removing as non-hazardous material as the levels change – a real game changer in terms of management and cost saving.

Call us on 0330 128 1030 or contact us and a dedicated member of our MCM team will be more than happy to assist you.

On the right path: Choosing landscape materials

On the right path: Choosing landscape materials

Pathway to a perfect park landscape: Soils, Aggregates and Stone

First impressions really count, and that does not stop at any park entrance. It continues onto the thoroughfare and beyond into every pocket of land. Waterlogged patches, unruly pathways and pot-holed roads are an instant turn-off, causing untold damage to your venue’s reputation as well as to vehicles and pedestrians.

Planted beds, hedge screening, wildflower meadows and green roofs can make your outdoor experience stand out for all the right reasons, too.  At that means taking a closer look beneath your feet…

Roadways, pathways, play and plants

Suppliers of British Standard topsoils and aggregates for almost a quarter of a century, MCM source materials from quarries and sites across the South East but have a UK-wide logistics network and are the first port of call for soils and aggregates to projects including Holland Park play area in Kensington, Kearsney Court historic park in Dover, roof gardens and avenues at Wembley Park and groundworks at the University of Winchester.

It is in these and other private, commercial and public open space projects where the correct specification, selection and supply of soils, gravels and aggregates is critical.

Choose the right landscape materials

Whether gabion stone for a cage wall or bank reinforcement, new planting or a forecourt of self-binding gravel that looks great all year round, discuss your options with us – we can guide you on product selection and advise on site preparation, calculating how much you need and how it can best be delivered to site dependent on access, space and location.  MCM supply in loose, direct-to-site loads up to 20 tonnes or in multi-lift bags so that deliveries can be tailored to suit.

British Standards soils and blends for planting, turf and meadow

Now more than ever, we want to embrace and enjoy our outdoor spaces.  And whilst your park is more than likely blessed with a natural environment, you can always add more – perhaps some hedge screening, new planting beds, lawns, playgrounds, improvements to your wooded areas or perhaps even a living wall or green roof.  Creating new beds means new soil and to ensure the healthiest establishment and long-term success of your planting, you should select the best soil blend and one that meets the most rigorous of British Standard specifications – and has the test certificate to prove it.  MCM supplies lightweight substrates for roof gardens and areas where soil weight and drainage are top considerations, as well as specialist soils for acid-loving plants. For wildflower planting in pockets around the development, choose a low fertility topsoil blend to provide the nutrient levels required for a thriving soft landscape whilst suppressing the onset of invasive weeds across the planting scheme.

The perfect park landscape

For paved and unpaved roads, temporary working areas or to prepare for an outdoor event, choose an aggregate that compacts and drains without losing stability.  For new trees, shrubs or turfed areas, choose a rootzone material for a healthy root boost and a great start in life.  For walls and embankments or a contemporary landscape statement, choose gabion stone, Scottish cobbles or other decorative aggregates to emphasise and complement the luxury of your accommodation.

A welcoming environment

Lakeside, forest path or car parking – the ground really matters.   Make best of use of the space and the landscape around your park by ensuring each surface is fit for purpose.  Crushed concrete for roadways and access; self-binding gravel for forecourts and around high traffic areas; permeable recycled aggregates for paving sub-bases; free-draining soils for planted areas; low fertility soils for wildflower planting and bioretention soils for swales to alleviate flood risks and waterlogging.

Hard Landscaping (non-domestic) Projects over £500K

Choosing a category to sponsor for each of the seven years MCM have supported the BALI National Landscape Awards is always a tricky one. This year, we will be on stage, handing over and applauding the Winners and Principal Award Winners in the HARD LANDSCAPING category.

Which industry sector to choose?

The company supports so many prestigious landscape projects across the UK in regeneration, public sector, civil engineering and construction sectors.

Which landscape specialism to support?

Within those sectors, MCM supply British Standard topsoils and specialist soils for planting, rootzone, sports grounds and SuDs projects; but they also supply sub base, roadway, hard landscaping, primary, recycled and decorative aggregates for highways, walkways and hardscapes.

Which type of project to promote?

Previously sponsoring community and regeneration projects of large and small scale and budgets as well as soft and hard landscaping categories, MCM is such a good fit across the board as the range of products and specialisms they provide – including the management of waste streams on site BEFORE fresh product arrives – that the choice is a tough one. Managing multiple haulier relationships and hundreds of scheduled deliveries of soils, aggregates and waste services every week is no mean feat.  It is imperative to keep the supply chain fluid, efficient and informed – and that’s where Mike steps up, managing the scheduling system and following up where necessary alongside the Sales team, headed by Darrel Burgess.

A long-standing (suffering?!) supporter of Charlton Athletic, Mike is also into boxing – up till recently only as a spectator.  But from October 2021, Mike will be training for a Charity White Collar Boxing Event, raising funds for Cancer Research.  The charity bout will take place in December 2021 and we will be following his training journey closely.

And what makes Mike tick on a typical MCM day?

“There’s certainly never a dull moment in the supply of soils and aggregates  – it is a pretty full-on commitment from 8am onwards.  Blink and it’s lunchtime!  I enjoy being able to assist the MCM team using our efficient booking and tracking systems. This means I can give an informed, professional response to both haulier and customer at any stage of the delivery process.  It’s immensely rewarding.”

Haulage and Logistics: Simplifying the Supply Chain

MCM provide a range of bulk haulage options available across the UK, but we can also manage your muck away and site clearance too.  So if you need topsoil in Central London, recycled aggregates in Oxford or a site clearance in Yorkshire, get in touch with Mike and the team.  For peace of mind and a simplified supply chain, call MCM on 0330 1281030 or email [email protected] today.
