Sponsors and Suppliers for BALI Award Winners

MCM’s sponsorship and support of BALI, their awards and events is in recognition of their registered contractor members and their ongoing professionalism and achievement in the built environment.
MCM supply soils, aggregates and waste management services across the UK landscaping supply chain and are, quite literally, the foundations of many an award-winner. And 2021 is no different!

Goddards (Landscape Contractors) Limited: Canada Gardens, Wembley Park

Getting the soil to the right spec, delivered when needed is always critical to any successful landscape. But in a roof garden or podium landscape, its specification, load weight and drainage it is absolutely imperative to hit those specifications and expectations.

Supplying lightweight roof substrate for the raised borders on this prestigious roof garden complex at Wembley Park for Goddards (Landscape Contractors) Limited, MCM played an important part on the long-term client’s achievement of this years Award for Commercial Roof Garden or Podium Landscape under £500K.

Which landscape specialism to support?

Within those sectors, MCM supply British Standard topsoils and specialist soils for planting, rootzone, sports grounds and SuDs projects; but they also supply sub base, roadway, hard landscaping, primary, recycled and decorative aggregates for highways, walkways and hardscapes.

MCM Managing Director Shazna Ali commends the Goddards team on their Award:

“We have worked with Peter and the Goddards team on many prestigious landscape projects. The podium landscape called for our supply of lightweight soils to an exacting specification, and delivery in tonne bags for ease of lifting. Instructions and delivery criteria were clear throughout. Effective communication makes these projects work well. Goddards are the tried and trusted experts here and this award is testimony to that – CONGRATULATIONS from the MCM team!”

Recyclable multi-trip bags are multi-use too!

MCM Multi-trip Bags 100% Recyclable

Bagging soils, aggregates and substrates

Did you know our MCM multi-trip bags are 100%  recyclable? Local council recycling facilities will take them as Class 5 PP, just the same as a tomato ketchup bottle. You can also reuse it by filling with your own green waste or construction rubble to extend its life yet further. All in all, using MCM multi-trip bags are a really sensible circular choice to help protect the environment.

(and you can reuse tomato ketchup bottles as bird feeders, too!  Image below, courtesy of the Wildlife Gadget Man)

Class 5 PP (Polypropylene) Bags

Environment comes first

PP can be recycled as CLASS 5 Recyclable Material if your Local Authority accepts this (always check first).  You can recycle this plastic if your Local Authority mentions:

  • Packing tape
  • Plastic Straws
  • Take away tubs
  • Ketchup bottles
  • Plastic picnic ware
  • Plastic bags or film that can’t be stretched- these are not recyclable

Polypropylene can be recycled into food containers, brooms, compost bins and gardening tools such as edging or plant pots

MCM bagging: Simple, recyclable, reusable:

To ensure the most flexible of delivery options available, MCM offer bulk bagging services. Using nationwide bagging partners for deliveries across the UK, we provide multi-trip bulk bags for aggregates and topsoil.  This allows simple and timely deliveries of orders, bagged and ready for action where access and weight restrictions may be limited such as in roof gardens and podium landscapes.

MCM Mike rolls with the punches at Charity Boxing Event

As part of the Ultra White Collar Boxing series of charity fundraisers, our own Mike Lally, Sales and Logistics Administrator, stepped under the ropes for his own bout on 11 December 2021. Although he might not have beaten his opponent on this occasion, he was a champion in fundraising, beating his £1K target and raising £1162 in total for Cancer Research UK. Speaking once the gloves were off, Mike said:

“The whole thing was really rewarding and after putting in so much effort over the 8 weeks, to see it all pay off and to have raised so much money feels like such an amazing achievement.”

Congratulations from all of his MCM team mates to Mike on his sporting and fundraising efforts on the back of an exhausting 8 week exercise regime. There to offer their first-hand support and encouragement at the event held in Windsor just before Christmas, the MCM team cheered him on from start to finish. Well done Mike!

Taking a fresh look at MCM

A fresh, new logo for quarter century milestone

In 2022, MCM will have been servicing, supplying and supporting the construction sector for 25 years.  That’s a quarter of a century of soils, aggregates and waste management services for civil engineering projects, new landscapes, residential builds and commercial schemes across the UK.

In all that time, we have continued to work with long-standing clients and forged strong bonds across the industry.  The business has changed and adapted with our client base, but our management team continue to work closely with established and new customers to ensure we maintain the height of professionalism across the supply chain.

The New Logo

With just a small update of colour and a little more clarity, we are marking our 25th birthday with a new logo (as well as other celebrations and events next year).  The new logo retains the strength and presence of the M of Matthias (Jason Matthias, our founder), the C of Construction (as this is remains at the very heart centre of our business) and the M of Materials – simplifying supply chains across the country with locally sourced soils and aggregates.

The logo may have changed, but our values have not.  MCM: Sourced. Supplied. Simplified.

Locally sourced construction materials

Locally sourced construction materials

Why source construction materials locally?

Building trust

Trusted network local to site

If your business is in construction, your business is complex. Challenged with sourcing materials and services on site before, during and into the maintenance phase, you will need to build a trusted network of suppliers and service providers – or gain a soils and aggregates supplier who can do that for you – nationwide coverage, local deliveries.

Building that trust with a supplier who can source landscape materials – fresh or from recovered construction waste – for roadways, planting, turfing and ground preparation locally will benefit not only your bottom line, but your lead times, sustainability goals and social responsibilities.

Shorter delivery and lead times

Quick solutions for source and supply

Site conditions change rapidly and frequently. The best laid plans sometimes take a turn. MCM’s logistics team rise to the challenge here, engaging with their networks to source and supply quickly, in smaller deliveries as required, when and where you need them. It is this adaptability, flexibility and quick reaction speed that has helped MCM client projects to maintain momentum. Reducing downtime and increasing site confidence, Construction Managers have confidence in the reliability of punctual, regular deliveries – just in time.

Avoid complexity

Waste out. Fresh soils and aggregates in

Often your “first responders” on site, soil disposal and waste removal needs sensible and wise consideration and handling. Our MCM waste management team are on site at the earliest opportunity to assess and test the material to be removed and to advise and arrange its classification and remediation.

We get it.

Sustainability

Meeting environmental standards

Sourcing local materials and using recovered construction waste can reduce the overall wastage associated with a build. MCM operate within an intricate network of aggregates and soil suppliers. Complying with regulations and environmental requirements, the team at MCM source and supply recycled materials, repurposed from local sites, tested and certified.

MCM fully managed waste

Managing construction waste streams

Managing construction waste streams

Construction and demolition sites – what’s in your waste?

For those managing sites in the landscape and construction realm, the correct identification, classification, handling, removal and disposal of hazardous waste can prove a risky, costly and potentially litigious undertaking.

Confidence in your construction waste partner

  • Is your waste classified correctly?
  • Is your paperwork correct?
  • Whatever the waste on site – hazardous, green or non-hazardous, can you follow the correct procedure, methods and protocols to legitimately manage your waste stream safely and quickly so that work on site may continue?
  • Will your waste be disposed of in an authorised facility?

Whilst these questions define your waste stream responsibilities, it need not be your headache. MCM have been managing construction waste for over 25 years, from their early days in the 1990s clearing petrol station forecourts, removing and disposing of hazardous waste across Central London and the South East.

Managing Construction Waste Streams

Your waste manager

Following the fundaments of the Waste Hierarchy closely, MCM collaborate with customers to help reduce waste at source, advising and actioning the reuse of materials, recovering and recycling construction waste wherever possible and disposing of non-recoverable construction waste in a professional, legitimate, safe and efficient manner.

Defining and classifying waste

From an initial site inspection, our MCM technical team will assess the site and soil conditions and will conduct testing to define its classification using EWC codes.  This will determine proposed remediation, removal and disposal at approved EA facilities or its recovery, reuse and recycling potential.

The MCM technical inspection look at the WAC – Waste Acceptance Criteria. These are parameters and definitions of different types of waste. WAC testing is conducted after soil waste has been inspected for solid and leachate analysis. Simply put, it will determine which disposal or management facility the waste can be sent to.

Recovered construction waste

Encouraging the reuse of recovered construction waste and its recycling into aggregates makes good economic and environmental sense. Wherever feasible, our MCM recycling team will be able to recover construction waste and return to site in its newly recycled form, meeting the same standards of primary aggregates and reducing the need for quarrying natural materials.

Managing Construction Waste Streams

Managing Construction Waste

UK construction waste and carbon emissions

The UK currently consumes 600 million tonnes of products annually while generating about 220 million tonnes of waste. Not only do construction, demolition and excavation contribute about 60 per cent of this amount, but the built environment accounts for 45 per cent of the UK’s total CO2 emissions.

MCM use haulage partners with EURO VI vehicles as standard. These are the lowest emission vehicles possible within the current legislation with no loss of power but using less fuel. This means more efficient engines with less detrimental impact on air quality, and the height of compliance in London’s Low and planned Ultra-Low Emission Zones.

25 years’ managing construction waste streams

MCM’s continuous commitments managing waste, monitoring legislation and securing strong links with legitimate, reputable waste sites across the UK have been pivotal in their successes in major civil engineering and construction site clearances. It frees up project timelines and budgets, ready for MCM to return with deliveries of fresh soils and aggregates.

WM3 Classification by Testing

Keen to tighten up on the professional, legal and safe management of hazardous construction waste across the UK, the Environment Agency is assessing how waste streams are managed.

All too often, demolition waste is mishandled and misclassified, leading to the incorrect or missing identification of hazardous material on site.

To ensure hazardous waste is responsibly identified, managed and remediated across the waste chain, MCM partner only with registered professional waste partners. With these commitments, MCM are helping their construction clients move towards a more circular economy and a simpler supply chain.

Waste on site? Here’s the basics:

Working with a waste classification partner with full and rapid measure testing available like MCM, you will be able to:

Sampling Plan

Any sampling plan will need to include WHY the samples are being taken (whether initial characterisation or ongoing compliance); HOW the samples will be taken (from where, volumes, containers used, storage etc.) and HOW MANY samples are required for the volume of waste generated.

MCM will arrange to collect site samples for subsequent site testing and analysis at a MCERTS laboratory.

Waste Analysis and Interpretation

MCM’s MCERTS laboratory partners will analyse the site waste to standard benchmarks but will also test for other potential hazardous substances. This will take into account site history; waste processes and any anomalies.

Interpreting the results, MCM’s testing partners will select the waste’s hazardous or non-hazardous EWC code based on the analysis of all properties.

Recommendations and Remediation

MCM will be able to advise on the appropriate and legislative removal, disposal or remediation of your construction waste based on this analysis as implemented by their laboratory partners working within the Environment Agency Technical Guidance WM3 for Waste Management.

Waste wood regulations changed on 1 September 2023

Waste wood regulations change on 1 September 2023

Important changes affecting wood disposal

There are important changes governing the handling of waste wood within construction and demolition.  Guidelines as to how businesses should know categorise and consider wood within their construction waste management processes have been published by the Wood Recyclers Association.

Potentially hazardous waste wood

From 1 September 2023, potentially hazardous waste wood from ‘pre-2007 buildings’, will need to be tested to establish its classification as hazardous waste or non-hazardous waste.

The Environment Agency (EA) confirmed that the previously-applicable Regulatory Position Statement (RPS) 250 is withdrawn from 1 September 2023. From this date, any business customers disposing of any loads containing wood will need to declare the wood content and have this tested before safe and correct disposal can be arranged.

The revised definitions are included in the Wood Recycler’s Association’s (WRA) latest guidelines.

Real support, where it matters

Crucial in our development and growth as both a successful business and valued local employer, MCM are currently advertising for three new sales roles and have also been accredited as a Living Wage Employer by the Living Wage Foundation.

The Living Wage commitment ensures that people working receive a higher minimum wage than the Government minimum for those over 23. This real living wage is calculated using the cost of living as a key factor – so much more reflective of real life and real people.

The Real Living Wage

According to the Living Wage Foundation, 1 in 8 employees are paid below the real Living Wage. Joining the 14,000 accredited Living Wage Employers and only 89 construction companies in London and the South East, MCM are making an important statement and ongoing commitment to each and every employee.

Softening the impact

Managing Director Shazna Ali said:

“This is such an important accreditation for an employee, both to acknowledge and promote. Our workforce is growing, and we need to support current and new employees realistically, fairly and justly.  The cost of living crisis has had such a huge impact, so we are keen to offer support where it matters most.”

Creating real change

MCM joins a growing number of small to medium-sized businesses in the region and industry, as well as key construction players including Maylim, LendLease, Wates and Frosts Landscapes.
