Burgess Park: From rapid waste test to contractor handover

Saving, sustaining and supporting

In November 2023, MCM began working with the appointed landscape contractor on the redevelopment of the sports pitches within Burgess Park.
Re-opened after an £8m transformation in 2012, the Park itself is central to the local community and features sports facilities, a lake and structures recognised for their heritage.

Assessing the site and project requirements

Within the groundworks programme, excavations led to the need for waste removal which is when MCM were contacted for their muck away services. Heading to site and providing their initial MCM Rapid Measure Test service, the team were able to identify, categorise, report and arrange remediation within 24 hours. After the safe removal of over 120 loads of non-hazardous material, a significant volume of excess topsoil remained.

The MCM team will always look for ways to manage smart waste, so proposed an initial site visit for rapid measure waste testing.  The team also conducted separate soil sampling and tests to assess the potential to retain and reuse the soils within the programme.

The simplest solutions

After an initial site visit by one of the MCM technical team to ascertain the best contract management and logistic options, a delivery programme was prepared ensuring lorries entering the site would safely reverse with banksmen for any deliveries or removals.

As  well as the non-hazardous waste removal, MCM were able to conduct sampling and soil testing.  The test results indicated that the excess topsoil was a low fertility specification and it was recommended that the contractor keep and reuse on site for outlying public open spaces and reseeding.  The contractor was able to skim and retain the soil on site without the costly and environmentally-detrimental logistics or removal.

The customer benefits

MCM were able to offer the initial Rapid Waste Testing service to categorise and advise remediation quickly and effectively.

Soil sampling and testing indicated that the soil on site met the low fertility specification. This meant that the topsoil was ideal to be reused across the surrounding grounds. Reusing topsoil meant that there was little to no additional material removal required, meaning a win-win reduction in vehicle movements and construction circularity, and an overall cost benefit to the contractor.

Smart waste management forms an integral part of MCM’s approach, ensuring waste can be safely, legally and correctly recycled and reused wherever possible.

The service and supply

From November to late January, prior to handover to the pitch contractor, MCM have been active on site, from testing to removal and fresh material supply including:

The end game

The landscape contractor is returning to site this week (1 February 2024), on schedule, ready to handover a professionally managed and completed area to the pitch contractor. The project has been delivered with the most economical, sustainable, circular use of soils and recycled aggregates for the smooth running of the works programme.
