Choosing the right horse arena sand

Sourcing for equestrian, polo or gallop arenas

Choosing the right sand surface for a horse riding arena is crucial for the safety and performance of both the horse and rider. Durability, performance, wear and cushioning can be determined by a number of factors, important to consider when sourcing the right material and supply partner:

Particle size

Equestrian arena sand suitable for riding surfaces will have particles uniform in size within a range from 0.1 to 2.0 mm in diameter. Any larger and the surface is too harsh; any smaller and it will compact too easily and harden. With the particle’s angularity, they will interlock, creating a more stable surface.

Washed or unwashed

Washed sand is preferable as it reduces the presence of fine particles, which can cause dust and respiratory problems for both horse and rider.

Footing depth

The footing depth should be between 10-15cm, sufficient to cushion and reduce the risk of impact or injury on the horse.

Local availability

Avoiding excessive transportation costs and minimising carbon footprint, MCM always endeavour to source material from local partners. This helps meet environmental, cost and logistical targets.

Get in touch with MCM to discuss your horse arena sand requirements and its purpose, e.g. to create a firmer surface for dressage or a softer surface for jumps. The MCM team will be able to advise on the most suitable grade and specification of equestrian sand for your arena surfaces.
