Nationwide Delivery – Soils, Aggregates & Construction Waste Management
Crossrail is a major £20 billion infrastructure project providing high-frequency commuter trains between Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Central London. The Elizabeth Line is a 73 mile (118km) rail link, opened in May 2022, and will accommodate a high-speed train and Tube link connecting the outer western reaches of London to the further eastern points.
To provide maintenance access and ventilation for these new services, a number of access hatches were commissioned, one of which is located at Mile End.
Commissioned to build the Mile End access hatch, the Costain Skanska C360 joint venture selected contractor Turney Landscapes and MCM to support the groundbreaking infrastructure project. Delivered over a challenging three-month timeline, MCM worked closely with the Turney team and the main contractors. Following the detailed project plan, MCM sourced and supplied soils including standard BS3882 Topsoil, BS8601 Subsoil and a specialist free draining lightweight aggregate called Lytag Geofill®.
Despite minor hold ups due to unforeseen plant, staffing and machine issues, MCM delivered all of the materials required for the access hatch within the challenging three-month timeline. The Crossrail hatch is now securely in place and, with its innovative design, it is one of a kind.
To deliver the Lytag product to the Crossrail site on time, MCM transported the material from the factory 300 miles away to a local facility. With the material much closer to Mile End, it was possible to deliver it exactly when it was needed on site, and to keep the project running on schedule.
To meet health and safety requirements for the Crossrail site, MCM used only FORS Gold Registered vehicles for delivering the soils and free-draining aggregates. Regular safety checks were also conducted on MCM drivers to ensure they met Crossrail rules and protocols.
The strict project timeline left no room for error in terms of either planning or logistics, and MCM was more than up to the challenge. All project team members worked tirelessly to ensure that the materials were delivered on time, contributing to the overall success of the project.
